In a strategic move to bolster the integrity of football in Asia, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced a pivotal four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA). This partnership marks a significant enhancement in the AFC’s commitment to safeguarding the game against the threats of match-fixing and corruption.
A robust framework for monitoring and investigation:
The collaboration between the AFC and the IBIA introduces an advanced framework for monitoring betting activities. Utilizing the IBIA’s Monitoring and Alert Platform, the AFC will now have access to real-time data on suspicious betting activities. This data integration aims to empower the AFC with enhanced capabilities to swiftly detect and address potential match-fixing incidents, ensuring the sport’s integrity is upheld across all competitions.
Andrew Mercer, the AFC General Counsel and Director of Legal Affairs emphasized the critical importance of maintaining high ethical and sporting standards within Asian football in the AFC’s release. “The AFC’s Vision and Mission have outlined our steadfast ambitions to uphold the highest ethical and sporting standards, and we are committed to preserving our key tenets of fair play and integrity,” Mercer remarked. He stressed the significance of leveraging strong collaborations with world-leading organizations to bolster the fight against match-fixing, highlighting this MoU as a crucial step in strengthening the AFC’s integrity measures.
Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, also commented on the essential role of cooperation in any effective integrity monitoring and investigative framework. “Cooperation is a vital part of any effective integrity monitoring and investigatory framework, and IBIA is delighted to be able to strengthen its relationship with the AFC through this important information-sharing collaboration,” said Ali in an official press release (pdf). He noted that IBIA would help safeguard the AFC ecosystem by monitoring its members’ global customer account activity, which covers over $300 billion in sports betting per annum.
